On 6 August I intended to talk with Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, author (with her husband James D Houston) of Farewell to Manzanar and keynote speaker at this year's Sacramento
State Summer Writers' Conference. There was a problem with the telephone connection so I read several chapters from her novel The Legend of Fire Horse Woman instead.
In honor of the newly announced United States Poet Laureate Charles Simic, I then played recordings of him reading four of his poems.
I also mentioned the Nevada County Poetry Series annual Cowboy Poetry reading, which will take place at 7:30 PM on Saturday 18 August at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley and will feature Harold Roy Miller, Willis Lamm and Ken Gardner.
