Monday 11 December 2006
On 11 December I talked with Richard Silberg, associate editor of Poetry Flash and translator with Clare You of Ko Un's Three Way Tavern (University of California Press). I then talked with Booktown's Bombay correspondent Siddhartha Lokanandi about New York and other bookstores, about Bombay (now Mumbai) and about India in general. The bookstores we mentioned include Labyrinth Books in Manhattan, the Seminary Co-op in Chicago, and Cody's and Moe's in Berkeley. The Indian authors we mentioned include Rabindranath Tagore, Premchand, R K Narayan, Salman Rushdie, Jhumpa Lahiri and Vikram Seth. We talked for several minutes about Suketu Mehta's Maximum City (Random House) and Vikram Chandra's Sacred Games (HarperCollins), both set in contemporary Mumbai.
