On 20 August I talked with Thomas Blackburn, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, about his recent book An Artist's Portfolio: The California Sketches of Henry B Brown, 1851-52 (Malki-Ballena Press), which contains a number of drawings of scenes in Nevada County and more finished portrayals of Native American life in other parts of Northern California.
I then talked with Nevada County writers Maxima Kahn, who is best known as a poet and teacher but has just completed her first novel Sounding the Deep, and Louis B Jones, who has published three novels (Ordinary Money (Viking), Particles and Luck and California's Over (both Pantheon) and completed two more which he has not yet tried to publish. We talked about the balance of writing and teaching and the complexities of publishing. They will probably return to Booktown early next year for an update on the progress of their novels.
