On 20 February I talked with
- Nevada County Librarian Steve Fjelsted about the anthology Open to All which he is co-editing with local poets Molly Fisk and Steve Sanfield. He encouraged Nevada County residents to submit poems, essays or artwork about their experiences with libraries before 1 May.
Later I discussed the concept of memes, first elaborated by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. I recounted my encounters with the concept in The Mind's I, edited by Douglas R Hofstadter and Daniel C Dennett (Basic Books) and in a review of Dennett's Breaking the Spell (Viking) and finally becoming infected by it after reading Hofstadter's Metamagical Themas (Basic Books).
- local author Barbara Larsen about her new book Movement with Meaning: A Multisensory Program for Individuals with Early-Stage Alzheimer's Disease (Health Professions Press).
Finally, I briefly discussed Anthony Bianco's The Bully of Bentonville: How the High Cost of Wal-Mart's Everyday Low Prices is Hurting America (Doubleday). My planned interview with the author fell through at the last moment; I hope to reschedule it.
